Arrival In Redang

Our package deal driver drove us to the tour operator office where we had to wait for a few hours before getting the ferry to Redang Island, via a breakfast in Terengganu’s Chinatown. We were joined there by two miserable other travellers, who didn’t say a word to us. Oh well. I think they were from Eastern Europe.

At about 7 am we headed into Chinatown for some breakfast, which to be honest I could have done without after eating that rather sludgy tuna roll on the coach which has made my stomach rather bloated and unsettled. After some coffee and noodles, and a quick wander up the streets looking at the rather nice old buildings in the town, we get back on the bus and get dropped off at the Sejahtera jetty where I need another dump. I hope that’s the end of it (and I was thankful that at least it was a 'normal' toilet...)

It’s not long before we are boarding the ferry to take us to the island, and I have to say that it’ all really well organised: the bus was on time, there was someone there to meet us, getting us at the jetty in plenty of time and the boat was on time – all of these I am surprised about being here in Malaysia, after my all too many experiences of things not working. I guess I am still irked about the Unifi incident (which they still haven’t confirmed when they’ll sort out!)

The approach to the island is amazing - beautiful turquoise sea, white sand, blue sky and a band of happy staff waiting to greet us - paradise! We lug our luggage into reception and after our briefing we check in and go to our room – unfortunately we weren’t able to get the studio room that we’d originally booked as I messed up the dates (I booked from Friday night to Sunday, rather than Saturday night to Monday and Monday had no free rooms), so we had an Economy Room (hate that description) which was ok – when it said 'economy' in the booking I imagined a rug on the floor and a bottle of mosquito spray. However, it was OK, actually, quite basic, but to be honest, we didn’t plan to spend too much time in the room.

Time to explore..!
