Night Market, Spacecraft And More Food

After an hour or so rest and freshen up, I make my way back towards Jonker Street for some food and a wander through the night market. Food was at Nancy’s Place, a Nyonya restaurant, and I consult my food guide to understand what to order: there are a load of delicious looking things to choose from and I settle on a couple of tasty sounding items:
otak otak
  • "Top hats": a crispy thing shaped like a top hat filled with cooked onion, egg, coriander and carrot
  • otak-otak (fish paste block which had a strange texture but was lovely)
  • lor bak (pork with herbs wrapped in a soya sheet and fried)
  • plus some noodles.
And a large beer.

After dinner I head out into the night market, which is about 1 km in length and absolutely packed with all sorts of street vendors selling almost anything. The atmosphere is great, and the smells of all the cooking is making me feel hungry again! I resist the temptation to eat anything more, and make my way back to the spaceship thing (Taming Sari Revolving Tower, to give it it’s real name). By this time there is no queue, so I get on board and get abducted for about 15 minutes, and get a fantastic night view over Melaka. It’s really quite tacky and I was given more food (a muffin and a chrysanthemum tea drink which I had years ago and thought was repulsive), which I was tempted to just throw away... but just as I was about to, I got a scowling look and I am sure I heard a muffled comment about wasting food… That told me!

On the way back to the main part of town, I walked along the riverfront and caught a cruise up and down the river, which was lovely. I was getting a lot of stares from people, but that’s because I am gorgeous, I suspect…

A wander back through the market, picking up a deep-fried carved potato on a stick on the way, brings me back to the hotel and I am knackered after a day of wandering about, eating, climbing hills, wandering through graveyards, up and down spaceships, cruising the river and eating, so I crash for the night.
